Bully breeds are often known as the clowns of the canine world — and it’s not simply due to their large, goofy grins. Now Pit Bull Rescue San Diego is celebrating these fun-loving pooches with the group’s first-ever “Pittie the Fool” calendar photograph contest.
“Our theme, while a bit kitschy, is built around the idea that so many people who don’t know see pit bulls as these grumpy, evil beings,” says Kim Smith of PBRSD. “Most pit bull owners will be quick to tell you what ‘fools’ their dogs really are.”
Proceeds from the competition go to PBRSD’s medical fund, which helps canines like Tonka, who just lately needed to have his leg amputated. Tonka was deserted to run the streets and was hit by a automobile. A neighborhood shelter contacted PBRSD, and Tonka is now recovered and able to be adopted.
“Sometimes medical expenses are the only thing in the way of the adoptability of a dog,” Smith says. “Tonka is a perfect example of this. He is an exceptional dog in every other way except that he now only has three legs.”
To enter the photograph contest, go to http://www.pbrsd.com/photograph by way of Aug. 15. A $5 donation is recommended for every entry, and votes are $1 every. The PBRSD’s 2011 calendar goes on sale in late October at http://www.cafepress.com/pitbullsandiego.
