In reality their story goes back even further than the hardy Newfoundland fishermen’s friend. It’s now pretty obvious that the black Labs ancestors were taken to Newfoundland by British fishermen in the first location. Probably in the 1700’s. This is due to the fact that the gene for the black coat color in Labradors, and several other dog breeds, is dominant. Whereas the genes for a brown or yellow coat are not.

A Labrador will just have a chocolate coat color if he doesn’t have the black gene. And he can only have both the black and the brown coloration ‘switched off’ in the existence of two yellow genes.

Loyal, enchanting, contented and outgoing to all he happens, the Labrador Retriever is the number one registered dog in the AKC. Labs are full of energy and will run to the door to greet you (or anyone, for that matter) as if you’d just returned from a year-long trip. They are truly “man’s best friend,” and are at their happiest when engaged in family activities. They love running, hiking, swimming and playing fetch for long periods of time and are really patient with children of all ages.
